Mountain
Biking - Road Cycling
Both on and off road biking can be arranged on the same
basis as described in the walking activity section.
You can enjoy the sense of freedom that mountain biking and road
cycling provides by hiring one of our bikes to explore this unique
area at your own pace.
Alternatively we provide:
Bike tours with Land Rover
support to provide technical backup, first aid, refreshments, shelter
and a place to store your unwanted items.
At the end of the day we can provide transportation back to your
accommodation if you are feeling tired, or the chosen cycle journey
proves too difficult.
You ride amongst the pretty whitewashed mountain villages, stopping
for refreshments on the way. To spice up the journey you can leave
the tarmac roads behind and discover some downhill off road tracks
designed to get the adrenalin running.
A worthwhile ride is along the "Rio Guadalfeo"
into the river bed and through the water, great fun on a hot day,
usually someone in the party ends up in the water taking an early
shower.
We provide the bikes, safety helmets, drinks containers, a rucksack
if required, although you may prefer to bring your own helmet; also
suitable sun glasses and a mobile phone are advisable.

Archery
Everyone, whether they are seven or seventy can enjoy archery. The
sport presents exciting challenges, requiring as it does a certain
amount of physical effort, mental strength, self discipline and
self confidence.
Our classes are suitable for absolute beginners as well as improvers.
We can arrange target archery, which is now an Olympic discipline,
and also field archery together with crossbow archery. The latter
is a great favorite as it involves a walk around a specially designed
course among the almond grove and scrub undergrowth, shooting at
concealed targets, with score values to create a bit of fun and
competition, often the archer has to contend with patterns of light
created by trees and undergrowth, sometimes branches obstruct the
target, skill and instinct dictate how the shot will be made particularly
on some of the steep downhill and uphill shots.
Some classes are supervised and are available to individuals or
small groups. Once competent the archery equipment can be hired
without supervision.

Water
Sports
With such a magnificent Mediterranean climate,
it is little wonder that the Costa Tropical and
Costa Almeria are world famous for their sparkling
blue waters, and superb choice of water sports.
Experience the thrill of scuba-diving, fishing, windsurfing, sailing,
water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing and snorkeling. With crystal
clear waters many of the beaches have been awarded the European
Blue Flag for excellence.
One location not to be missed on the Costa Almeria
is the Cabo de Gata - Nijar National Nature Reserve.
Here you will discover an unspoilt, wild and beautiful place, largely
untouched by man. Along the coastline you will find superb beaches
and secluded coves to discover; note that nudity is common on some
beaches.
The waters that surround Cabo de Gata are a haven
for snorkelling with an abundance of marine life, here you will
find the delightful El Monsul and Plays Genoveses both south of
San Jose and are within easy reach of "Cortijo las Chumbas"

Winter
Sports
The Sierra Nevada Ski
Resort " Solynieve" can boast
superb skiing at an altitude of over 10,000 feet with brilliant
sunshine and breathtaking views. Known as the friendly mountain,
the skiing range is wide open with long and gentle runs, although
the resort does boast an above tree line vertical of 3,757 feet.
The mountain can be a delight for strong skiers
with some challenging runs, whilst intermediates
will be in heaven with long mellow cruising and big giant slalom
turns. Beginners are also well catered for with
plenty of space and experienced tuition available.
Snow boarding is allowed
on the entire mountain, though is limited around the beginners ski
practice area for obvious safety reasons.
There is a snow board school and plenty of snow board rentals.
Other activities, such as snow tubing is a must,
whilst snowmobiling and dog sledding can
also be enjoyed.
High Season: Christmas
/ New Year / Mid February & Easter
Mid Season: January
/ early & late February & March
Low Season: Early December & January
The Sierra Nevada Ski resort of Solynieve is a little over 1
- 1/2 hours drive from Cortijo Las Chumbas.
If you prefer to take things a little quieter and enjoy cross
country skiing or just good old fashioned sledging
fun for all the family, then we recommend Puerto de le Ragua,
which is just over an hour's drive from Cortijo Las Chumbas, a small
quiet resort with spectacular views in every direction where you
can hire a ski guide for cross country skiing and sledges. There
is also a small restaurant and toilets.
